The Four Agreements – Tips to Personal Freedom

May 11, 2013 by

This is an excerpt from this amazing book from Don Miguel Ruiz on tips to personal freedom and living a fulfilling life. The four agreements are below-

  1. Be Impeccable with your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.
  2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
  3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
  4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

We should all agree that a significant share of our woes in thought and action will be relieved if we lived these tips on a daily basis. Food for thought.

Be persistent, don’t stop trying

Jun 23, 2011 by

“Many of life’s failures are people who had not realized how close they were to success when they gave up.” - Thomas A Edison

There are different variations to the response Thomas Edison had for the New York Times reporter who asked him whether he felt like a failure for failing at getting the light bulb 700, 1,000 and 10,000 times in various versions of the story respectively. Most importantly, he responded that he had not failed but only found a bunch of ways through which the light bulb could not work. I don’t know how more ridiculously positive Thomas could have been. Why would you want to try something 700, ,1000 or 10,000 times and not get it and then choose to believe you ‘learnt’ ways with which that thing would not work? You might ask what the utility of that was but that positive attitude led him to discovering a light bulb that actually did work moments after this interview.

In essence, a lot of us try things once or twice and when they don’t work, we just give up and let it go. Do we still have that drive to keep trying and trying with the hope that we would eventually find a breakthrough? Here’s one to conclude this article:

“No matter how hard you work for success, if your thought is saturated with the fear of failure, it will kill your efforts, neutralize your endeavors and make success impossible.” - Baudjuin

As you go through your day today, remember to keep trying and forget about the thought of failing. As long as you can conceive it in your mind, you can achieve it. They say quitters don’t win and winners don’t quit. If they quit, they wouldn’t be winners.
